I recently spent Labor Day weekend in Los Angeles, where I'm from. It was great to see family and friends and tell them all about Salt Lake City, and what I've been up to here. Despite the fact that living in Salt Lake City is not new news, many were still shocked when they heard I was living in Utah.
Their first response was "Utah? How's that working out?" To which I would say, "Fine. It's just any other place for the most part." Their very next comments were usually, "Wow, the Mormons... have they converted you?" To my fiance they would say, "Are you a polygamist yet? How many wives are you going to have?"
I know Utah is known as a Mormon state, but I was shocked by everyone's strong reactions and stereotypes of the Utah that are very incorrect.
It made me think: It's 2008. If people's stereotypes of Utah haven't changed by now, will they ever change? And do Utahns want out-of-state opinions to change?
