HUNTINGTON - A new memorial honoring the nine men who lost their lives at the Crandall Canyon coal mine last summer will be dedicated this weekend, officials said.
The memorial will be placed near the side of the road which leads up Huntington Canyon, and toward where the Crandall Canyon mine used to operate. It is also located near the Huntington city cemetery.
The memorial is a cast iron sculpture that features the faces of all nine men killed in August 2007, as a result of a collapse inside the mine. Six miners
became trapped following the initial collapse on Aug. 6, and three rescue workers were killed a few days later by another cave-in at the mine.
Rescue workers tried for many days to reach the trapped coal miners by drilling holes into the mountain near areas that officials suspected the men might be. However, none of the drilled holes led crews to the men's location.
The miners' bodies have not been recovered.
The new memorial will be formally dedicated on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend the dedication. Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr. might also be in attendance, officials said.
