GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - A gunman who killed a dentist and the wife of a high-profile resident near the Utah-Colorado border died on Sunday, from injuries inflicted upon himself during the incident this weekend, officials said.

Stefan Alexander Martin-Urban, 22, died around 1:00 p.m. Sunday.  An initial probe into the man's background showed that he had no criminal record.  Police said he had reportedly been living with a relative near Denver for the last seven weeks after moving from the Los Angeles area.

Police said they had not yet found any link between the suspect and the victims and did not know of any ties the suspect had to the Grand Junction area.

Martin-Urban shot himself Saturday as authorities closed in on his vehicle after shots were fired earlier that morning outside the home of dentist Terry Fine, 61, police said.

At the time, Fine and his wife, Linda, were meeting up with former Mesa State College President Michael Gallagher and his wife, Floyce, to head on a vacation, police said.

Gallagher was also recently the President of Idaho State University in Pocatello in 2005.

The gunman is a former resident of Fairbanks, Alaska, where he graduated from high school in 2005.  The suspect's father died last year, but his mother still lives there.

“The family of Stefan Martin-Urban extends their heartfelt condolencesto the victims of the families and requests their privacy be respectedas they grieve their losses,” a family spokesman said Sunday.

Investigators determined Martin-Urban fired more than a dozen rounds, some from close range, as he approached the four in the driveway of Fine's home.  Officials believe the gunman reloaded at least once, and had ammunition and spare magazines in a canvas bag he was carrying.

Floyce Gallagher, 60, and Terry Fine died. Linda Fine was hospitalized. Fine's neighbor, who ran to the home to help after hearing the shots, also was shot but was out of the hospital Saturday night. Michael Gallagher was not hurt.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was working to identify the gun's history.

Police said information from the suspect's vehicle indicated Martin-Urban was in the Grand Valley area Friday morning, but police were trying to determine where he was between then and the shootings.

Police executed search warrants at Martin-Urban's home and the Fines' home but would not say what they found in the homes or in the suspect's vehicle.

No suicide note has been found.
