LAYTON - A woman who was 8-months pregnant found herself in immediate danger on Wednesday afternoon, after she got herself stuck on the train tracks -- with a FrontRunner train just seconds away, officials said.
Authorities say the woman approached a train crossing in Layton shortly before 5:00 p.m. Wednesday. Although warning lights had began flashing and the crossing arms were in the process of lowering, officials say the woman tried to cross the tracks.
Moments later, officials say, all of the crossing arms were down -- but the pregnant woman's minivan was right on the tracks.
At this point, the woman panicked and attempted to make a U-turn, but the small space only permitted her to make small movements at a time -- while a FrontRunner train was speeding toward the van at nearly 80 miles per hour.
Moments later, the train clipped the rear end of the woman's minivan -- tearing off the bumper and blowing out the back window. Fortunately, though, the woman was not hurt.
UTA officials say from the time the lights start flashing and the crossing arms lower, a FrontRunner train is just 40 seconds away from passing. In this case, that wasn't enough time.
Though the train clipped the minivan at a speed of 79 miles per hour, it received no damage. Also, no passengers on the train were hurt.
